The Russian Far East:

Problems and Prospects

Images of Kamchatka

One of the highlights of our stay in the Russian Far East was our trip to the Kamchatka Peninsula. We spent parts of three days in the area of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskii, the main city on the peninsula. Our purpose of going to the peninsula was to climb in an active volcano area. The morning of our second day on the peninsula we were taken by truck to the base of two active volcanoes. While there, we climbed the "Camel", a rather small, inactive volcano. We were able to take some breaktaking photographs. The photos below are of this wonderful experience.

Kamchatka is a land of volcanoes. As we were flying into Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskii, we looked to the south and saw the Goreli volcano. Later that night we traveled toward it to swim in hot springs associated with the volcanic activity nearby.

Far left: As we drove from the airport to our hotel, this was our first glimps of the Avacha volcano.

Left: This was our first view of Koryakskii volcano, just to the west of Avacha.

Far left: Avacha volcano as we drove toward our hotel.

Left: The morning we left to climb in the vicinity of the Avacha volcano, we woke up to a dense layer of fog. It lifted later. This is the truck that took us up a river valley, across a snow field, to the base of Avacha.

Far left: We stopped in a dry river bed. The material is ash and small volcanic rock.

Left: From the river bed we could see Avacha in the distance.

Far left: The Koryakskii volcano from the river bed.

Left: As we drove farther up the river bed, we had a more dramatic view of the Koryakskii volcano.

Far left: The closer we got to the volcanoes, we encountered more snow until we were essentially driving on top of a glacier. The Avacha volcano is in the distance.

Left: This is Kathleen standing on the glacier with the Koryakskii volcano behind her.

Far left: Near the base of Avacha, we stopped at a base camp. This photo of Avacha was taken from the basecamp.

Left: We ascended the Camel from behind. As we traversed the west side, Avacha came into view.

Far left: That's me on the north side of the Camel with Avacha in the distance.

Left: Same.

Far left: We have made it to the summit of the Camel.

Left: From the summit of the Camel, we had an excellent view of Avacha.
