The Russian Far East:

Problems and Prospects

Our Visit to Khabarovsk

One of the major cities of the Russian Far East is Khabarovsk. Khabarovsk is located some 700 kilometers north of Vladivostok. We traveled there on the "Ocean," a train specifically devoted to carry passengers back and forth between Vladivostok and Khabarovsk. Our stay in Khabarovsk lasted for two full days. We departed from Vladivostok at 7:00 pm and arrived in Khabarovsk the next morning at 8:00 am. That day and the following day, we were guided around the city by two students from Khabarovsk State Pedagogical University. They took us to museums, shops, on a boat trip on the Amur River, and arranged for us to meet 30 geography teachers at a local school. Khabarovsk is a very beautiful city. The photos below portray our visit to that city.

Left: The city has done an excellent job in creating a riverfront park along the banks of the Amur River. From the bank of the river, one has a good view of a portion of the park and one of the churches.

Far left: The Amur River forms part of the boundary between Russia and China. It is a huge river and flow northward past Khabarovsk. This is from the park adjacent to the river.

Far left: While in Khabarovsk, we had a discussion with about 30 K-12 geogaphy teachers. After that discussion, five of the teachers went with us to a local restaurant. Here we are ordering food and getting ready to eat.
