PLACES

The Great Lakes Tour began in Searcy, Arkansas and followed this route:  Searcy to St. Louis, St. Louis to Chicago, Chicago to Detroit, Detoit to Mackinaw City, Mackinaw City to Sault Ste. Marie, Sault Ste. Marie to Green Bay, Green Bay to Milwaukee, Milwaukee to St. Louis, and St. Louis back to Searcy.  Along the great loop around Lake Michigan, we stopped at many places.  The photos that follow are a few of the sites along our tour.

Elephant Rocks State Park is just southwest of St. Louis, Missouri.  It is an area of granite intrusion and subsequent erosion.

Our first night was spent in downtown St. Louis.  While we were waiting for the Cardinals to play, I had time to take a photo of the City Building with the arch behind it.

On our way from St. Louis to Chicago, we stopped in Springfield, Illinois, a place where Abraham Lincoln lived, practiced law, and is buried.  Above is the Lincoln home, and at right is Lincoln's Tomb.

In Chicago is the wonderful Field Museum (the photo left and above).  There were many things to see there, but perhaps the most spectacular was the recently discovered and exhibited dinosour called "Sue."  This is the most complete skeleton of a T. Rex to be discovered.  It was very impressive.  I love the photo at the left.  Doesn't she look scary!!!

Also in Chicago, was the Museum of Science and Industry (above left).  It as well, was a wonderful museum.  I particularly enjoyed the tour of a German submarine that was captured toward the end of World War II.  This submarine was carrying an Enigma machine (above right), the secret coding device used by the Germans.  The British had broken the code prior to the machine's capture, but, it was an impressive site nonetheless.
