Teikyo University Holland One of the largest universities in Japan, Teikyo University also has a very large campus in the Netherlands in Maastricht. It is at this location that UCA 's Netherland campus (UCAN) is housed. There are many buildings that belong to Teikyo University that are scattered around the city. However, the complex where UCAN is located is quite large. The photos below are of special people involved with the university, the UCAN facilities, and photos of Dutch and UCA students. |

First and foremost, we appreciate our wonderful hosts! On the right is Mr. Masaaki Tsuchida, President of Teikyo University Holland. On the left is Fumio Fujimoto, Coordinator of the UCAN Program. They are most gracious and are making sure that our experiences in Maastricht and Europe are successful. We thank them! |

This is the building in which UCAN is located. In the basement is the cafeteria that serves three meals a day except on Saturdays and Sundays. The ground floor houses President Tsuchida's office, the office of Fumio Fujimoto, UCAN faculty offices, classrooms, and the computer lab. On the first floor are the faculty studio apartments and on the third floor are the student apartments. |

As one passes through the main entrance of the building shown above, the sign at the left appears in front of you. You will note that a medical center and other study programs are part of the Teikyo complex. |

Fumio Fujimoto (at left) is the Coordinator of the international student programs. This is his office. Rob Palm, a computer technician, is assisting Fumio with something. Fumio is a wonderful host. His orientation program was great and permitted us to get over our jet lag while touring Maastricht and Liege, Belgium. He cares for our every need with thoughtfulness and consideration. Rob helped me with cable problems on my laptop so I could use it while I am here. |

Dr. Bonhomme and I share the office shown on the left. We each have a desk and share a computer. The office contains an overhead projector, slide projector, TV and VCR, and other supplies for instructional purposes. Across the hall is a copy machine to which we have free access. Rob activated a computer port so I can use my laptop in the office. |

This is the classroom we are using for our classes. Fifteen students are enrolled in four courses that Dr. Bonhomme and I are teaching. This is my Field Studies course that is focusing on Europe's cultural landscape. Don't they look eager to learn? |

The computer lab is for UCAN students as well as those participating in the Maastricht Center for Trans-Atlantic Study. It is used very frequently, especially now as we stay in touch with family and friends almost on a daily basis. E-mail makes it very easy and convenient to communicate over long distances. Later, as students begin their assignments, they will use the lab to type papers and reports. |

This is the cafeteria where we eat our meals. Students from Baylor University and other locations also eat here. The food is excellent and plentiful. |

These are the master chefs that prepare and serve our food. They are great! On the left is Jos and on the right is Roland. We appreciate their good work. One of our students is a vegetarian. They always have food for her. |

This is an island in the cafeteria where we get bread, cheese, cereal, and salads. Behind it are places to get apple and orange juice, milk, water, and various types of fruit. |

On our first Tuesday night at Teikyo University, we had a welcome banquet hosted by President Tsuchida and Mr. Fujimoto. The table shown on the left was filled with appitizers consisting of a variety of fish, salads, and vegetables. The main course consisted of meat, rice, and a mushroom sauce. Deserts were cheeses and fruit. It was a wonderful meal. |

This shows some of the students toward the end of the banquet. At the lower right is the 5-year old daughter (Isabel) of Lena and Brian Bonhomme. |

More students enjoying themselves toward the end of the banquet. At the far left is Mrs. Fujimoto. She also works for the university. |

Four Dutch students joined us early in our stay in Maastricht. They have served as guides and become our friends. On the left is Dennis and in the center is Maarten. They have been so willing to spend time with our students and have made sure that our students have been introduced to Maastricht night life. I am not sure that that has been such a good idea! |

Sjoerd, in the back, is the other Dutch student who attended the banquet. He will give us Dutch language lessons beginning next week. At the table is Dr. Brian Bonhomme, his daughter, and wife. Jan, another Dutch students, was not in attendance, but we see him frequently. |

President Tsuchida is visiting with Brad Phillips about the importance of keeping the UCAN Program so that UCA students can continue to have the opportunity to study abroad. Experiences like these are so valuable in breaking down cultural and ethnic barriers. The world would be a much better place if more of us traveled and mingled with people from other lands! |
