Oslo to Bergen One of the great experiences of our Spring Break tour of Scandinavia, was our trip from Oslo to Bergen. Our intent was to make sure was were able to see and travel on a fjord. Most of you know that a fjord is a glaciated valley filled with water from the sea. Norway's west coast is famous for its beautiful fjords. Our trip took us from Oslo by train to Myrdal. We then changed to a smaller train and descended from 4000 feet to sea level as we traveled down the Flam Valley to the head of one of the branches of the Sognefjord - the longest in the world. From Flam, we traveled by boat on the fjord to Undredal, then by bus to Voss, then by train to Bergen. The pictures below show you the absolutely spectacular scenery between Oslo, Myrdal, Flam, Undredal, Voss, and Bergen. This series of photos end with a few shots of Bergen, a wonderfully beautiful city on the west coast of Norway and once part of the Hanseatic League - an early trading system. I am just going to show the pictures without narrative. Just enjoy the beauty!! |

Olav Kyrre, King of Norway between 1066 and 1093, is credited with founding the City of Bergen, which became the capital of Norway in the 13th century and was the largest city in the country for the next 600 years. Because of its harbor setting and commercial importance, in the Middle Ages, Bergen became a vital link in the Hanseatic League (a chain of European and Baltic cities with shared trading agreements). |
