After our stay in Moscow, we traveled by train to the capital of the Karelian Republic, Petrozavodsk. Our host was Petrozavodsk State University. While there, we had classes in history, geography, economics, and Russian language. We traveled to Valaam Island and to the Kivach waterfalls. our six-day stay in Petrozavodsk was filled with new information, new sites, and a wonderful time.

The governor's office supplied us with flags to take to give as gifts to our host universities. Galina made sure our stay in Petrozavodsk was pleasant and successful.
Petrozavodsk
This is the building where our classes were held while in Petrozavodsk. Our classes were exceptional. We learned a great deal about Karelia and the taiga while here.
The train station in Petrozavodsk was at the head of Lenin Street. From the station you could look toward Lake Onega, a mile or so away. Petrozavodsk is a modern city with a multitude of restaurants and shops. We were taken by bus to the north shore of Lake Ladago then by boat to an island in the northern part of the lake called Valaam. While on the island, we toured a major religious center. Parts of it are shown in this photo. North of Petrozavodsk is water resort and park. The park contains these waterfalls called Kivach. We were told they were the second tallest falls in Europe.
