Title: Animals in Russian
Type: Single lesson
Length: 2 class periods
Keywords: Cyrillic
Grade Level: Fifth and up
Overview: Students will learn the sounds of the Cyrillic alphabet. They will have a chart to refer to and will decode words and match them with the animal they name.
Supplies: Student copies of the Cyrillic Alphabet, copies of color sheets for each of the animals named.
Standards: Foreign Language Strand 1
Standard Source: Arkansas Curriculum Frameworks
Objectives: Students will learn that Russian words are spelled phonetically
Strategies: Students will be given a chart to use to decode the names of specific animals that sound very similar in Russian to the way they are pronounced in English. When they decode the name correctly, they will match the word to the animal and color the picture of that animal.
Instruction: A chart should be given to each student explaining the sounds associated with each letter (a chart is supplied). After practicing the sounds, students should each be given an animal name to decode. When they read the name correctly, they will find the animal that matches their name and color it.
Extension: This could lead to a lesson on animals in Russia or further practice in decoding other Russian words.
Assessment:
Students will be able to recognize the Cyrillic letters and apply the
correct sound to them.
